Timing belt replacement: the most expensive breakdown if it snaps
The timing belt it's one of the most critical parts of your engine. If it breaks while you're driving, the damage to the engine can be so severe that repairing it costs more than the car itself. Here's why it's vital to change it on time.
What does the timing belt do?
The timing belt synchronizes the movement of the crankshaft with the camshafts, ensuring that the valves open and close at the exact moment during the combustion cycle. If the belt breaks, the valves and pistons collide, destroying the engine internally.
When should it be changed?
Each manufacturer sets different intervals, but as a general rule: engines with a rubber timing belt should have it replaced every 60,000-120,000 km or every 5-6 years (whichever comes first). Engines with a timing chain have longer intervals (150,000-250,000 km) but also require inspection and eventual replacement.
The cost of not changing it on time
Replacing the timing belt preventatively costs between 300€ and 800€, depending on the vehicle. If the belt breaks while the engine is running, engine repair can cost between 2,000€ and 6,000€, and it might even be necessary to replace the entire engine. The financial difference speaks for itself.
It is noticed that the belt needs changing
Unfortunately, the belt rarely gives warning before breaking. The only signs might be: a squealing or whistling noise from the timing area, difficulty starting, unusual engine vibrations, or visible cracks in the belt (requires mechanic inspection).
