It depends on the manufacturer and the type of oil. Modern cars with LongLife oil can go up to 30,000 km or 2 years. Older vehicles or those with mineral oil usually need a change every 10,000-15,000 km. The golden rule: check your car's manual and don't exceed the recommended interval - degraded oil costs much more in repairs than a preventative change.
Degraded oil loses viscosity and lubrication capacity. The result is increased friction in all moving engine parts: crankshaft, camshaft, connecting rods. Over time, premature wear appears, knocking noises on startup, and in extreme cases, the engine can seize up. Changing the oil on time is the cheapest maintenance there is - and the one that gives your engine the most life.
