How to prepare your car to pass the ITV first time
Getting through the ITV can be a source of stress for many drivers. However, with a proper preparation, you can pass the inspection first time, no surprises. We explain point by point what they check and how to prepare.
What do they check at the ITV?
The vehicle technical inspection assesses the safety, emissions, and overall condition of the vehicle across approximately 80 control points, grouped into: vehicle identification, bodywork and chassis, engine and transmission, steering system, braking system, tyres and suspension, lighting and signalling, pollutant emissions, and noise.
The most common reasons for rejection
Defective lighting (blown bulbs, poorly adjusted or opaque headlights) is the number one cause of rejection. This is followed by play in the steering or suspension, worn or unbalanced brakes, tyres with insufficient tread depth (1.6mm legal minimum, 3mm recommended), emissions above the limit (especially in diesel), and visible oil leaks.
Pre-ITV Checklist you can do yourself
Check that all lights are working correctly, verify the tyre tread depth, make sure there are no cracks in the windscreen in the driver's area, check that the windscreen wipers clean correctly, verify that the horn works, check that the seat belts retract and lock, and make sure you carry the warning triangles and reflective vest.
