What is the EGR valve and what is it for?

The EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve is a component of the anti-pollution system that recirculates part of the exhaust gases back into the intake manifold. Its function is to reduce combustion temperature and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. It is a mandatory component in all modern diesel vehicles.

Causes of code P0401

The most common causes for this code are: EGR valve clogged with carbon buildup (the most common cause in diesel engines), faulty EGR position sensor, recirculation passages blocked by soot, a vacuum leak in the control lines, a defective EGR control solenoid, or excessive carbon buildup due to prolonged urban driving.

Symptoms you'll notice

The most common symptoms are: the engine warning light (check engine) illuminated, loss of power especially during acceleration, engine jerking or hesitation, high fuel consumption, excessive black smoke from the exhaust, unstable idle, and in some cases, the car may enter limp mode, limiting power.

Is it serious? Can I keep driving?

The P0401 code is not an immediate emergency, but you shouldn't ignore it. Driving with a faulty EGR can damage other components like the catalytic converter or the DPF, which are much more expensive to repair. What's more, you won't pass your ITV with this active fault code.
