Audi and VW 2.0 TFSI: when the timing chain gives the first warning
If you have a Audi A4, A5, A6, TT, Q3, Q5 or Volkswagen Golf, Passat, Tiguan, Scirocco with 2.0 TFSI engine (EA888 gen 1, 2 or EA113), you've probably already heard about this issue: the timing chain stretches prematurely and can end up causing catastrophic failure.
We explain how to spot it early and what the real cost is to change the complete kit at Zamule Cars Palma de Mallorca.
Why does the 2.0 TFSI chain stretch?
The 2.0 TFSI EA888 engines (Audi A3 8P, A4 B7/B8, A5 8T, A6 4F, Q5 8R, TT 8J, VW Golf 5/6 GTI, Passat B6/B7, Tiguan 5N, Scirocco) and the earlier EA113 models share a timing chain cover instead of a belt.
The problem lies in the hydraulic tensioner: with mileage, it loses the ability to maintain correct tension, allowing the chain to vibrate and progressively stretch. In the long run:
- The tensioners and guides wear out
- The chain is skipping teeth
- The valves collide with the pistons
- The engine remains total loss
The usual critical mileage: 120.000-200.000 km. Cars with urban use and non-premium oil arrive sooner.
Early warning signs (don't ignore them)
- Metallic rattling on cold start (the first 2-5 seconds)
- A 'metallic rain' type noise when you accelerate to mid-range RPMs
- Engine light warning with codes P0017, P0018, P0019, P0021
- Jerking under partial load
- Subtle loss of power
- Slightly higher oil consumption
- Unstable idle in some cases
- Emissions / catalytic converter warning (misfiring combustion)
If you hear rattling on a cold start, come to the workshop this week. Not next.

Full replacement of the Zamule timing belt kit
When there's a suspicion or warning, the only professional approach is to replace the entire kit. Replacing just the tensioner or just the chain is wasting money because the rest will wear out soon.
Complete kit we install at Zamule:
- OEM Iwis / INA Timing Chain
- New OEM hydraulic tensioner (redesigned, not the old one)
- Timing chain guides / sliders

- Warm up properly before pushing high RPMs
- Always fill with premium oil (Mobil 1 ESP, Castrol Edge Pro, Liqui Moly Special Tec)
- Don't use cheap generic oils, no matter how much you see 'VW approved'.
- Oil change every 15,000 km max for urban driving.
- Listen to your engine when starting cold, or at least once a month.
- OEM ODIS Diagnostic every 60,000-80,000 km to detect early correlation

Conclusion act today, save tomorrow
The stretched chain of the 2.0 TFSI is the most preventable fault with good maintenance, but also the most catastrophic if you ignore it. Changing the complete kit on time costs 980-1,500€. Rebuilding an engine due to valve collision: 4,500-8,000€.
