Complete guide to tires: safety, savings, and when to change them
The tires are the the only point of contact between your car and the roadTheir condition directly affects braking, stability, fuel consumption, and safety. In this guide, we explain everything you need to know to keep them in optimal condition.
When to change tires?
The legal tread depth limit is 1.6mm, but experts recommend changing them when they fall below 3mm, as from that point, their water evacuation capacity drastically reduces and the risk of aquaplaning increases exponentially. They should also be changed if they are more than 5-6 years old, even if they have good tread, as the rubber hardens.
Correct pressure: savings and safety
Driving with incorrect tire pressure has serious consequences. Low pressure causes increased wear on the edges, up to a 5% increase in fuel consumption, poorer cornering response, and a risk of blowout due to overheating. High pressure leads to excessive wear in the center of the tire, reduced grip, and longer braking distances. Check the pressure every month and always when the tires are cold.
Tyre rotation and balancing
Rotating your tyres every 10,000-15,000 km evens out wear and extends their lifespan. Wheel balancing should be checked if you notice vibrations in the steering wheel at speeds above 80-100 km/h, as an unbalanced tyre prematurely wears out shock absorbers and the steering system.
Summer tyres in Mallorca?
In Mallorca, winter tyres aren't necessary, but it's important to choose tyres with good water evacuation capabilities for the autumn rains and low rolling resistance to optimise fuel consumption.
