Revisión Rutinaria del Coche: Cómo Evitar Averías Costosas

Routine car inspection: how to avoid costly breakdowns

Most expensive breakdowns can be prevent with regular check-ups which cost a fraction of what an emergency repair would cost. In this article, we explain what to check, when, and why it's the best investment you can make in your vehicle.

How often should I have my car checked?

The general rule is to have a full service every 15,000 km or once a year, whichever comes first. However, there are checks you should do more frequently, even monthly, to spot issues before they turn into serious breakdowns.

Monthly checks you can do yourself

Engine oil level (with the engine cold and on a flat surface), coolant level (never open when hot), tyre pressure (including the spare), wiper blade condition, operation of all lights (brakes, indicators, side lights, dipped beam, and high beam), and windscreen washer fluid level.

Services every 15,000 km or annually

Oil and oil filter change, air and cabin filter inspection, brake system check (pads and discs), suspension inspection (shock absorbers, silent blocks), serpentine belt condition, fluid levels check (brakes, power steering, transmission), and electronic diagnostic scan to detect hidden error codes.

Services every 60,000-120,000 km

Timing belt or chain replacement (the most expensive breakdown if it snaps), brake fluid replacement (every 2 years minimum), spark plug replacement (petrol), fuel filter replacement, clutch inspection, and coolant replacement.

How much do I save with preventive maintenance?

An annual service costs between 100€ and 250€. A timing belt failure can cost between 2,000€ and 5,000€ to repair. Brakes left to wear down to the metal can damage the discs and triple the cost. Prevention is always cheaper than repair.
