How to tell if your car's brakes need changing

The brakes are the most important safety system of your vehicle. Knowing when they need maintenance can save your life and money. We explain the signs of wear and when to act.

Signs that your brakes need attention

The car takes longer to brake than usual, you hear a metallic squeal when braking (wear indicator), you feel vibrations in the brake pedal or steering wheel when braking, the brake pedal sinks more than normal, the car pulls to one side when braking, you hear a deep 'scraping' noise (metal against metal), or the brake warning light comes on on the dashboard.

How long do brake pads and discs last?

Front brake pads last between 30,000 and 70,000 km, depending on driving style and car type. Rear ones usually last longer (40,000-80,000 km). Brake discs last approximately twice as long as pads: between 60,000 and 120,000 km.

The danger of waiting too long

If you let your brake pads wear down to the metal, the metal-on-metal contact will damage your brake discs. Replacing just the pads costs between 80? and 150? per axle. If the discs also need replacing, the cost goes up to 200?-400? per axle. And if the brake calipers are damaged, the bill could exceed 600?.

Brake fluid: the often overlooked

Brake fluid is hygroscopic: it absorbs moisture from the air. Over time, this moisture reduces the fluid's boiling point, which can cause the brakes to fail during intense braking (the pedal becomes soft). It must be changed every 2 years.
