P0171 Code: Fuel mixture too lean - Petrol
The code P0171 means "System too lean (Bank 1)" and indicates that the engine is receiving too much air in proportion to the fuel, or insufficient fuel. This is very common in electronic fuel injection petrol engines.
What is a lean mixture?
The engine needs an exact air-fuel ratio (approximately 14.7:1 for petrol). When there's too much air or too little fuel, the mixture is "lean". This leads to incomplete combustion, generates more heat, and can damage internal engine components.
Causes of code P0171
Vacuum leak in the intake manifold, hoses or gaskets, dirty or faulty MAF sensor (airflow meter), aged oxygen sensor (lambda probe), weak fuel pump, clogged fuel filter, partially clogged injectors, faulty fuel pressure regulator, or a leaking valve cover gasket.
Symptoms
Unstable or high idle, jerking when accelerating, difficulty starting, a whistling sound from the engine (indicating a vacuum leak), paradoxically higher fuel consumption, and hesitation when pressing the accelerator.
Risks of ignoring it
Driving with a prolonged lean mixture can lead to overheating of the exhaust valves, catalytic converter damage, premature piston wear, and in extreme cases, a piston melting through due to excessive heat.
