The importance of your car's timing belt
If it breaks, everything breaks.
When we talk about the key component inside your car's engine that can cause a serious and very costly breakdown if it fails, we're talking about the timing belt. And the title expresses it clearly: “Si se rompe… se rompe TODO.”
What is the timing belt and why is it so important?
The timing belt is a toothed belt made of rubber or reinforced synthetic material, that connects the engine shaft (also known as crankshaft) with the camshaft in an internal combustion engine. Its main function is to synchronize the movements of the pistons, intake and exhaust valves, and other components, so that everything works in unison.
If this timing fails, the pistons could collide with the valves, resulting in severe engine damage.
When should the timing belt be changed?
There's no universal rule, as it depends on the manufacturer, engine type, vehicle usage, etc. But there are general guidelines:
Many manufacturers recommend changing the belt between 60,000 and 130,000 kilometres.
We also often take age into account: for example, if it's many years old even if it hasn't covered many kilometres.
In urban areas (such as Son Castellí or Mallorca with heavy traffic, traffic lights, etc.), wear and tear can accelerate.
In Son Castell (Mallorca), given the traffic conditions, we recommend checking the timing belt before 80,000 km or 5 years, unless the manufacturer states otherwise.
It's a sign that the belt may be about to fail
These are the symptoms every driver should know:

Difficulty starting the car or loss of power.
Visible deteriorated appearance of the belt (when visible): cracks, internal threads, loose fragments.

When it breaks, pistons can collide with the valves, the entire engine loses synchronization, and the damage can be extreme.

Possible need to replace the entire engine in the most severe cases.
