Code P0299: Low turbo pressure - Causes and repair
The code P0299 means "Turbocharger/Supercharger Boost Pressure Low". It's a common code in turbocharged diesel engines and can indicate anything from a minor issue to a serious turbo failure.
What does this code mean?
Your diesel engine uses a turbocharger to increase power by compressing the intake air. The P0299 code triggers when the ECU detects that the boost pressure does not reach the programmed level for the current driving conditions.
Causes of P0299
Leak in the turbo hoses or intercooler, blocked or misadjusted wastegate valve, stuck turbo actuator (variable geometry), cracked or loose turbo to intercooler hose, faulty MAP sensor (intake pressure), very dirty air filter restricting flow, turbo with excessive shaft play, or degraded engine oil affecting the turbo.
Typical symptoms
Significant loss of power (the car 'lacks pull'), abundant black smoke when accelerating, whistling or abnormal turbo noises, limp mode activated, increased fuel consumption, and jerking during acceleration.
Is it urgent?
S, quite urgent. Driving with this active code can seriously damage the turbocharger if the problem is a leak. A new turbo can cost between 800? and 3,000?, while repairing a hose or sensor costs a fraction.
