Code P0441: EVAP System Failure - Evaporative Emissions Control
The code P0441 indicates a problem in your petrol engine's evaporative emission control system (EVAP). This system prevents petrol vapors from the tank from escaping into the atmosphere.
What is the EVAP system?
The EVAP system captures gasoline vapors generated inside the fuel tank and routes them to the engine to be burned during normal combustion. Its main components include the canister (activated carbon filter), the purge valve, the fuel tank pressure sensor, and various hoses.
Common Causes
Fuel cap improperly closed or damaged (the simplest cause), canister purge valve stuck or leaking, saturated activated carbon canister, cracked or disconnected EVAP system hoses, defective fuel tank pressure sensor, or a leak in the fuel tank itself.
Symptoms
In many cases, the only visible symptom is the illuminated check engine light, as the EVAP system doesn't directly affect engine performance. However, you might notice a smell of petrol around the vehicle, and the fault code prevents passing the ITV.
The easiest solution
Before coming to the workshop, make sure the fuel cap is properly closed (it should 'click'). If, after properly closing the cap and driving for a few days, the light doesn't turn off, then the problem lies with another system component.
