Code P0234: Turbo overboost - Gasoline and diesel
The code P0234 indicates that the turbocharger pressure is above the maximum permitted value. Unlike P0299 (low pressure), this code indicates excessive boost, which can cause serious engine damage if not corrected quickly.
Why is excessive boost dangerous?
Excessive turbo pressure subjects the engine's internal components (pistons, connecting rods, gaskets) to forces beyond their design limits. This can lead to detonation (premature combustion), head gasket failure, piston damage, or in extreme cases, complete engine destruction.
Causes of P0234
Wastegate valve stuck in closed position (does not relieve pressure), wastegate actuator disconnected or broken, faulty turbo pressure control solenoid, MAP sensor reading incorrect values (ECU cannot control pressure), leak in the actuator's vacuum line, or variable geometry turbo stuck in maximum pressure position.
Symptoms
Excessively harsh acceleration followed by a power cut-off, activated emergency mode (limp mode), black smoke when accelerating, abnormal turbo whistling noises, and in some cars, the engine shuts down for safety.
Can I keep driving?
Not recommended. If your turbo is generating more pressure than it should, every acceleration puts your engine at risk. Come to the workshop as soon as possible.
