Code P0170: Fuel trim sensor fault - Diesel and petrol
The code P0170 Indicates a fuel trim malfunction in engine bank 1. This means the ECU cannot correct the fuel mixture within normal parameters.
What is fuel trim?
Fuel trim is the ECU's ability to adjust the amount of fuel injected in real-time. Using lambda sensors, the ECU adds or reduces fuel to maintain the ideal mixture. When these adjustments exceed the normal range (usually more than 25%), this code is generated.
Frequent causes
Defective or aged upstream lambda sensor, vacuum leaks in the intake manifold, dirty or faulty MAF sensor, injectors with incorrect flow, faulty fuel pressure regulator, exhaust leak before the lambda sensor, very dirty air filter, or an issue with the coolant temperature sensor.
Impact on your vehicle
Increased fuel consumption, reduced engine performance, potential long-term damage to the catalytic converter, high emissions that won't pass the ITV, and the possible appearance of other related error codes.
Professional diagnostics
This code requires an advanced diagnostic, including real-time fuel trim data (short and long term), a lambda sensor check with an oscilloscope, and a vacuum leak test. You won't be able to diagnose this code with just a basic reader.
