Code P0087: Fuel rail pressure too low - Diesel
The code P0087 indicates that the pressure in the common rail of the diesel injection system is lower than expected. This is a serious problem that can affect engine performance and cause unexpected shutdowns.
What is the common rail system?
The common rail system is the heart of modern diesel injection. A high-pressure pump generates pressures of up to 2,000 bar, which are stored in a common 'rail' or manifold. From there, the injectors draw fuel at the exact pressure needed for each injection. When this pressure drops, the engine cannot run properly.
Causes of P0087
Worn or faulty high-pressure pump, damaged rail pressure regulator, faulty rail pressure sensor, clogged fuel filter, a leak in an injector reducing system pressure, weakened transfer pump (low pressure), or leaky or restricted fuel lines.
Symptoms
The engine loses power or stalls, difficulty starting especially in cold weather, jerking and misfires, white smoke from the exhaust (unburnt diesel), irregular idling, and in severe cases, the car won't start.
Importance of acting quickly
A common rail pressure problem can damage the injectors (costing 200?-500? each) and the high-pressure pump if ignored. We recommend you don't continue driving and bring the car to the workshop as soon as possible.
