Brake pads and discs: signs for replacement, cost, and why not to wait

That squealing brake is already damaging the disc.

That sharp squeal when you brake is the metallic wear indicator touching the disc. At that point, your brake pads have already reached their limit. If you ignore it for another week, the pad's metal will scratch the disc. Changing pads: 60-80 ?. Changing pads + scratched discs: double.

Clear signs of brakes at their limit

• Metallic noise when braking (squealing or grinding): worn brake pads
• Vibration in the pedal or steering wheel when braking: heat-warped discs
• The car pulls to one side when braking: unevenly worn pads or seized caliper
• Longer or spongy pedal: degraded brake fluid or leak in the circuit
• ABS or ESP light on: may indicate a wheel sensor or braking fault
• Burnt smell after descending a mountain pass: overheated brakes, check calipers

How often are they changed?

Brake pads: 30,000-60,000 km depending on driving style (city driving wears them out faster). Brake discs: 60,000-100,000 km. Brake fluid: every 2 years (it absorbs moisture and lowers its boiling point).

In Mallorca, the descent of Coll de Sóller or the curves of the Serra de Tramuntana push your brakes to the limit. If you regularly drive mountain routes, have them checked every 20,000 km.

OEM vs aftermarket brake pads

There are "economy" pads for 15-20 ? per set that don't have R90 homologation. At Zamule, we only use pads with ECE R90 certification (mandatory in Europe) and discs from manufacturers like Brembo, Bosch, or ATE. The difference in braking distance is real and measurable.
