Worn Shock Absorbers: The Real Risks That Endanger Your Safety

You won't notice a worn shock absorber until you have to brake in an emergency.

That's the problem with shock absorbers: they degrade so gradually that you get used to the car's behaviour. By the time you notice them feeling 'loose', they've already been performing below the minimum safety level for months.

Critical fact: a shock absorber worn by 50% can increase the braking distance up to 20%. At 80 km/h, that's an additional 4 metres.

Signs that your shock absorbers are at their limit

• Nose dive during braking: the front end dives excessively when braking
• Body roll in corners: the car leans more than usual
• Bouncing after speed bumps: the car bounces 2-3 times after an obstacle (it should settle quickly)
• Noise over bumps: knock or clunk when driving over bumps
• Uneven tire wear: bald spots on the tread
• Oil leak on the shock absorber: the cylinder is leaking hydraulic oil

When are they changed?

The general rule: check at 60,000 km and consider replacement between 80,000-100,000 km. In Mallorca, with the mountain roads (Tramuntana) and city roundabouts, wear can be faster.

They are always changed in pairs per axle (both front or both rear). If you change only one, the car will be unbalanced.

What type of shock absorber does my car need?

Depending on the model and use:

• Conventional (gas pressure): most cars - great value for money
• Sport: for sports cars or heavier loads - greater stiffness and control
• Adaptive / electronic: premium cars (BMW xDrive Adaptive, MB Airmatic) - requires official software for coding
