Mercedes CDI: when the CP4 pump starts to fail

?? 10 May 2026 📝 Zamule technical team ? 5 min read ?? Palma de Mallorca

The Mercedes C, E, S Class CDI and SUV GLC GLE GLS with OM651 (2.1 / 2.2 CDI) and OM642 (3.0 V6 CDI) engines They install a Bosch CP4 high-pressure pump. It's a brilliantly efficient component, but with a known weakness when fed with mediocre quality diesel.

We explain the typical faults and how we resolve them at Zamule Cars Palma de Mallorca using official Mercedes Xentry.

Why does the CP4 pump fail in Mercedes CDI?

The Bosch CP4 pump is a very high-precision radial pump that generates pressures of up to 2,500 bar on the rail. Its weakness: critical lubrication that depends on diesel fuel.

When the diesel has low lubrication (low-flow diesel, condensed water in the tank, cheap biodiesel), the internal rollers and cams suffer premature wear. Result:

  • Metallic shavings in the system (grey metallic contamination in the filter)
  • Incorrect fuel rail pressure
  • Damage to injectors in series
  • In extreme cases: engine rendered unusable

Symptoms of a failing CP4 pump

  • Hard starting, especially when hot after stopping
  • Jerking under partial load
  • Gradual loss of power
  • Recurring emergency mode
  • Codes P0087 (low rail pressure) or P0089
  • Engine warning: pump efficiency or catalytic converter issue
  • Abnormal consumption
  • Extra or 'tic-tic' type noise near the pump
  • Grey metallic shavings in fuel filter (CRITICAL warning)

If you find metal shavings in the filter, do not start the car again and bring it in for an immediate diagnosis.

?? Related OBD-II codes

  • P0087 Low fuel rail pressure
  • P0088 High fuel rail pressure
  • P0089 High-pressure pump performance
  • P1247 / P1248 Fuel regulation out of range
  • P0091 / P0093 Pump pressure regulator

  4. If there are no metal shavings and the pump is at fault: CP4 OEM Bosch pump replacement with ?10% over dealership price
  5. New OEM fuel filter
  6. High-pressure line cleaning
  7. Xentry pressure regulator adaptation

How to avoid CP4 pump failure

  • Always fill up at well-known brand fuel stations with high turnover. (Repsol, Cepsa, BP, Galp, Shell)
  • Avoid small or low-cost petrol stations (higher risk of water or impurities)
  • Change your fuel filter every 30,000-40,000 km – don't wait until 60,000.
  • Mercedes oil specs MB 229.51 / 229.71 every 15,000-20,000 km
  • Don't run out of fuel (tank almost empty or condensation builds up)
  • If you're returning from a long winter without use, change the fuel filter before pushing the engine.
  • Preventive Xentry Diagnostic every 60,000-80,000 km
  • Inspect the fuel filter upon replacement: look for grey shavings or metallic sheen
