Malfunction light on: what it means, what to do, and when it's urgent

The check engine light isn't an emergency... until it is.

The engine light on your dashboard can mean anything from a loose fuel cap to a serious issue with your catalytic converter or oxygen sensor. The problem is: without a diagnostic scanner, you can't tell what it is.

What you should never do: ignore it for weeks or months, hoping it will 'turn off by itself'.

When is it urgent and when can you wait

Urgent - stop the car and call:

• The light is flashing (not steady): active misfire – continued driving can damage the catalytic converter.
• Engine temperature rising to the red zone
• Low oil pressure + warning light
• Smoke, strong burning smell, or sudden loss of power

You can wait 1-2 days (but no more):

• Fixed light without other symptoms
• Car running normally
• No unusual noises or smoke

What information do diagnostics actually provide?

A basic OBD scanner (30€ in any shop) only reads generic codes. What makes diagnostics with official manufacturer software different:

• Read specific codes from each system (not just the general engine)
• Displays real-time sensor data (lambda, rail pressure, actual temperatures)
• Allows activation and deactivation of actuators to isolate the fault
• Check previous repairs and ensure systems are responsive
